In May 2021, Peru's Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation (MVCS) organised an event called AQUATÓN to attract Peruvian entrepreneurs to develop solutions for the rural water and sanitation sector. Participating groups presented solutions to the following challenges:
- How can we create toilet modules that are easy to assemble, maintain and use for rural areas?
- What technological alternatives can achieve water disinfection for safe drinking water for rural areas?
The competition winners were CASA (Ciudades Auto -Sostenibles Amazónicas), who presented a dry toilet module in a structure with PVC pipe walls to store water, and AQUAmoss, with an eco-filter made of clay, sawdust, dry moss and colloidal silver.
To support this initiative, the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) entrusted cewas and its partner SABAVIDA with the accompaniment, training and support to the winning teams for the proper execution of the pilots, ensuring the operability of the winning proposals.
The project carried out by cewas and SABAVIDA aimed to stimulate and strengthen innovation in Peru's water and sanitation sector, with evidence that shows success stories and lessons learned.
