Majik Water uses novel, locally-adapted technology to harvest clean drinking water from the atmosphere and deliver it to people in our world’s driest places, starting in Kenya. Our technology uses solar thermal energy and sponge-like desiccant materials making it possible to get water in a low cost, energy efficient way. Desiccants are materials that adsorb water molecules from air, and release that water when heated. The desiccant we use is Silica Gel which is safe, non-toxic and abundantly available. Majik Water was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship in 2018.



Food security dependency on import, lack of storage capacity for garlic, and the inconsistent job opportunities for garlic farms workers are the main challenges that Mezzmix tries to tackle in Lebanon. In addition, garlic farmers usually do not adhere to organic farming practices which endangers the soil and environment in the long term. Producing sauces, seasonings, and condiments. Over time, it has emerged as one of the leading domestic producers of garlic paste and hummus [chickpeas paste]. Mezzmix aims to facilitate easier and more affordable access to garlic throughout the year by minimizing storage expenses. In addition, Mezzmix empowers local farmers by encouraging sustainable garlic cultivation practices. It seeks to reduce reliance on imported garlic. Mezzmix is working with up to eight garlic farmers during high-production seasons. These farmers typically operate on a small scale; hence, Mezzmix will provide them with sustainable opportunities for growth. The low-income workers employed by the garlic farmers will benefit from sustained employment and business continuity. Additionally, Mezzmix ensures work and income sustainability for the existing 11 employees, and it will also create another two job opportunities.



The “MoSan” sanitation system provides dignity, safety and hygiene in densely populated settlements, as slums or refugee camps in developing countries. Urine and feces are collected, treated and recycled to create reuse products, like fuels and fertilizer. The environment and water bodies are protected, people’s health improves and the service offers job opportunities within the area. The system and hardware was designed in co-creation with slum dwellers.



Mobile Alert Toilets (MAT) is a social business that improves overflowing pit latrines in the urban slums of Kenya by retrofitting them with containers and sensors. MAT provides convenient and hygienic removal of faecal sludge from the slums as well as dignity and safe working conditions to sanitation workers.MAT was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship 2019.

Mruna offers BiomWeb, an onsite nature-based wastewater treatment system that harnesses the power of nature combined with internet-connected devices to revolutionise access to sanitation. By leveraging newly accessible digital technologies, Mruna enabled an economical, practical, and environmentally sustainable system, that offers decision-making tools and analysis. Mruna imagines itself more than a wastewater equipment supply company, but as a water service provider and as a global Sustainable Network Infrastructure Planning consulting service that promotes urban resilience.



At NALAN we are working towards empowerment of rural women and WASH related problems in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. We work with a franchise system, based around a BioSan filter. BioSan is a simple nature-based water filter that can be produced locally anywhere in the world. We provide technical training to rural women to produce and sell the filters. Through this initiative we are converting unemployed rural women into micro entrepreneurs. NALAN was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship 2019.



NETCOWAS (Network of Community Water Services/Centre for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) manages community piped water services through local-level Public-Private Partnerships (PPP). NETCOWAS aims at transforming community piped water services into efficiently managed and creditworthy local water utilities. The objective is to adopt professional management practices to attain creditworthiness and improve access to financing for the piped water systems. NETCOWAS is developing a pilot revolving fund for creditworthy communities to maintain and improve their water systems. NETCOWAS collaborates closely with the communities and their respective Municipal/District Assemblies to strengthen local ownership and participation.



Nakhla is an agribusiness from Iraq specialised in a variety of care services for private, public and commercial palm tree cultivations, including pollination, vaccination, curving and covering, harvesting, fertilisation, and disease control as well as cleaning the site after each operation in exchange for an annual subscription and a percentage of sales. Dates are processed and returned to the farmer for sale. Nakhla uses artificial intelligence data from the palm tree to ensure the best needs-based response.



Namliyeh is a young Jordanian brand focused on authenticity and craftsmanship to create high quality artisanal products. Seeking only organic ingredients from local farmers, Namliyeh produces a unique selection of seasonal, handmade artisan jams and tea, and also sells other naturally produced Jordanian products, such as honey.



Nazava Water Filters empower low-income households to purify their good tap or rainwater without the need for boiling or using electricity. With Nazava Water Filters households obtain safer drinking water at lower costs, enabling them to save over US$ 100/year, whilst also reducing Co2 emissions.

Omiflo designs and builds energy and chemical-free wastewater treatment systems that convert wastewater to clean water using natural plant-based biotechnology. Omiflo’s technology is a Hydroponic Macrophyte Filter (HMF). This is a nature-based biotechnology that combines phytoremediation and hydroponics principles, to recycle sewage/wastewater more effectively and sustainably than conventional mechanical or nature-based systems. This innovation uses no electricity or chemicals, eliminates smells entirely, and provides high effectiveness in a significantly smaller footprint than open ponds or constructed wetlands. The system is self-sustaining with no moving parts making it robust and sustainable. Omiflo delivers the effectiveness of electro-mechanical systems without their entry and operational barriers. Omiflo also reduce the need for costly infrastructure or technical expertise usually required to benefit from wastewater treatment.



Faced with high rates of fluorosis in his community, O’Claire aims to make a difference and provide affordable, safe water to the community they're located in Senegal.



Pak-Vitae is a social business aimed at improving access to safe water conditions in developing countries by providing affordable and effective purifiers. Usama Tanveer, the co-founder's pilot consisted of drilling two boreholes at an Afghan Refugee Camp in Islamabad and distributing the first prototypes of PakStraw filters, benefiting over 1,500 people.



The PGBC is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that aims to develop the environmental culture and understanding in the construction industry in Palestine. Such development would lead the construction sector towards international sustainable considerations, which will raise the efficiency of construction works in all of its phases (design, construction, and operation) and enhance the health for the occupants of the finished product.



Phoster is driven by the concept of nutrient recovery and reuse, and particularly the potential of closing the phosphorus cycle. Phoster seeks to improve water quality by using low-impact, scientifically-sound, sustainable, and economically self-supporting solutions. They work with local partners to develop solutions for nutrient flow management and treatment technologies that not only remove excess nutrients, but are already integrated into the reuse supply chain.

Plastic, as a waste, is everywhere! You can find it in nature, landfills and even in our oceans. Worldwide, less than 10% of the plastic waste is being recycled. In addition, 39% of the total carbon emissions are caused by the production of construction materials such as :wood, steel and concrete. Plastic lab came up with an innovative solution by turning the collected plastic waste from organizations and municipalities into recycled materials such as: Sheets, beams, and bricks. These materials can be used as a substitute to the conventional raw materials in furniture, construction, and interior design projects.



In 2009 about 50% of the tanzanian water pumps were broken and abandoned. Pump for Life (MSABI) provides a subsciption based system of maintenance services for water points in rural areas of Tanzania to increase coverage and sustainability of water infrastructure in the region.

Rural Water Management Solutions (K) Limited (RUWASCO) is a Kenyan registered social enterprise specialized in the development, operation, and management of smart water supply systems by using Innovative Service Delivery Models, the latest IT Solutions, and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). The company provides professionalization management services to water utilities through a Public-Owned-Privately-Managed model through a partnership framework with the county governments. The company also provides SMART water billing & payment services to water utilities through the M-MAJI billing system.



Molly Danielsson and Matthew Lippincott are promoting sustainable sanitation solutions and advocacy to legalise decentralised sanitation. With creativity and attention to detail they continously launch new projects in the sustainable sanitation sector in Portland, Oregon (USA).



Where most people see a pile of waste, ReFuse sees opportunities to improve the lives of vulnerable people. Secondary raw materials have an unexploited value. ReFuse bridges communities and industries, creating the key linkage for a circular economy able to empower each user. Waste power grows with scale: it is when friends, neighbors, and local organizations cooperate that they can use its value to fund community initiatives, and solve their most pressing issues. ReFuse flips the problem, making waste the solution.

The Social Enterprise located in Kisumu , Kenya, offers integrated innovative water service delivery solutions targeting both household and institutional consumers for sustained realization of SDG6.



SDW is a socio-environmental startup that develops life-changing water solutions. Among them is Aqualuz, a UN-recognized device that uses solar radiation to purify water contaminated by microorganisms from rural areas. The technology costs less than € 100, has enough productivity for one family per day and about 15 years of durability without requiring external operation and maintenance. SDW was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship in 2018.



An experienced sanitation professional, Abdoulaye is channelling his expertise into SIED SARL, a company specialising in the promotion and implementation of autonomous sanitation solutions. One solution is the innovative toilet design that includes a waste digester



SIVICA is a sanitation service provider that offers solid and liquid waste management services in underserved communities.



This association, based in Haiti, designs, tests, and implements social business models to increase access to cost-effective full-cycle household sanitation services in urban communities. The EkoLakay toilet by SOIL collects waste and transforms it into compost. More than 1000 households in Cap-Haitien and Port-au-Prince make use of the SOIL sanitation service for USD 3.5 per month.



Solvillion provides engineering solutions in the field of water and wastewater. The decentralized wastewater treatment system (DWWS) is developed as an onsite system to recycle wastewater and reuse it for agriculture. The customised treatment system targets rural households, which do not have access to the sewer system. It is easy to maintain, low in energy consumption and needs less de-sludging.



SPOUTS manufactures and distributes an affordable ceramic water filter, called the Purifaaya, which is made with local materials found in Uganda. The filter is easy to use and eliminates 99,9% of the bacteria.



SR3 INVENT is a company of Ecuadorian and Swiss partners located in Quito, Ecuador dedicated to the development of sustainable projects and businesses. The company ensures the corporate social benefit of their customers by strengthening their business by working with their stakeholders. The main working areas are sustainable water sanitation, environmental management and sustainability, environmental marketing and institutional strengthening. Within the business lines SR3 INVENT establishes the RRR Project “BOMBASOIL, pellets made of chicken manure enriched with nutrients with the goal to mitigate the water pollution caused by agriculture.



Safaa for Plumbing is the first commercial female company that provides plumbing services and trainings for private households as well as public institutions, NGOs and companies in Irbid and Amman. Besides saving critical amounts of water, the company aims at empowering women through special work qualification programmes, job opportunities and at the same time seeks to drawing a positive image for jobs traditionally dominated by men.



Samalex Solutions provides micro-flush bio-digester toilets to schools, middle and low income communities and onsite treatment that decomposes the fecal waste into organic manure, which is used for agricultural purposes. Samalex Solutions has built over 8000 micro-flush bio-digester toilets. Samalex is piloting a credit financing scheme to expand activities beyond its current markets and is intending to set-up a revolving fund to enhance affordability for households who are not located in subsidized areas and have to cover for the full price of a biodigester.



Sanergy focuses on tackling the urban sanitation crisis in Nairobi. The company builds a network of high-quality low-cost sanitation facilities, called Fresh Life Toilets; safely collects the waste from these toilets, treats it and converts it into valuable end-products, such as organic fertilizer. Sanergy’s approach gives access to safe sanitation to inhabitants of informal settlements in Kenya.



The Sani-Loan Initiative is a new financial mechanism to provide simple, locally adapted sanitation solutions to rural communities of Tanzania. Through Sani-Loan Initiative we design and construct affordable and quality sanitation facilities. These improved sanitation facilities comes with an accessible loan latrine scheme package with low interest rate that are to be paid back for two years time frame.The Sani-Loan Initiative was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship in 2018.



Sanitation Africa Limited (SAL) was founded with the mission to enable low-income households to access decent, and affordable sanitation facilities. SAL designs innovative toilet solutions suited for high water table and collapsible soils, upgrades existing latrines into fresh and hygienic facilities which are safe for children, women and disabled to create sustainable and dignified sanitation solutions. SAL is piloting dehydration of urine technology for use as a fertilizer. SAL also empties pits/ septic tanks using a locally made semi-mechanical pump for areas that are otherwise hard to reach. In addition to this, the company produces cooking briquettes made from the dried sludge, which is sold as an environmentally friendly option to firewood.

They design and manufacture home & self-care products that are sustainable, effective, and attainable.


Sennara is an environmental and social enterprise that produces and installs rooftop hydroponic systems for families in underprivileged areas, such as Gaza Camp. In addition, Sennara provides trainings, and coaching support for women, who are running the hydroponic rooftop farming activities and benefit from keeping a share of the revenues from selling the produce, with all sales channels provided by Senara.



During every agricultural season, water is wasted, which amplifies the scarcity and limited access to the national water reserve. Moreover, Lebanese farmers’ use of toxic chemical fertilizers leads to poor crop quality, contributing to the national food scarcity issue. SmartDrop is a start-up that offers a smart software and hardware system that simulates the water distribution system and monitors water networks and lines. Their solution helps municipalities and utilities distribute water fairly to all subscribers, as well as detect leakage sites accurately and quickly.



Solute aims to replace common single-use plastic products with biodegradable alternatives made 100% from natural organic material that can be safely thrown to the environment.



Sonic Fresh Waters offers treatment, packaging and distribution of safe drinking water to households, as well as public and private institutions.



The Swiss Toilet Organisation(STO) is an NGO dedicated to improving the sanitation culture in Switzerland. The STO advocates for a more extended use of sustainable sanitation technologies, for a comprehensive network of public toilets, and for a larger involvement of the society in efforts towards solving the global sanitation crisis.



Syna Consultancy is a social enterprise dedicated to providing dignified and sustainable sanitation solutions to marginalized groups. Their flagship product is Utulav, a portable commode-like toilet for people with disabilities and the elderly. Syna’s pilot consists of testing the prototype in two public hospitals in Naivasha and Nairobi.



TRI produces insulation material from textile waste. This does no only reduce the amount of solid waste produced, but also supplies the market with a locally-produced, high quality, and affordable insulation material. It can be used for buildings as well as refugee tents. In either case it improves the livelihood of the people and saves energy by reducing heat losses.



Tierra Grata is a women-led decentralized sanitation and hygiene solution for rural communities that includes a waterless toilet, shower and handwashing facility. Providing dignity and safe space for rural communities. Tierra Grata was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship 2019.



UWYTA, a dynamic social enterprise, embodies the fusion of environmental consciousness and social impact. It is a social enterprise established on the values of passion, innovation and commitment to create positive impact. In 2021, Margot Wehbe initiated this transformative journey as a university project, recognizing the environmental repercussions of non-recyclable chips and chocolate wraps. By shifting her perspecitive on non-recyclable waste, Margot’s solution was simple yet revolutionary. What started as an academic endeavor swiftly evolved into a venture that resonated with many. Securing a grant under Safir, an EU-funded project, became a catalyst for our growth and extended reach. UWYTA has since grown to be an agent of change making waves in Lebanon and beyond. By 2023, it achieved a significant milestone with the acquisition of its dedicated space. Going beyond addressing multilayered plastic challenges, we broadened our focus to include fabric waste, amplifying our positive impact on the environment. VIQUA is a social business based in the Philippines, a country with over 2,000 inhabited islands prone to natural disasters. VIQUA develops Compact Mobile Hybrid Water Treatment Systems for both emergency settings (incl. desalination technology) and fresh water supply for remote areas. VIQUA was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship 2019.



Varet Products develops innovative, practical, and affordable solutions for the sanitation industry, in the form of products and infrastructure for effective solid waste and wastewater management. Varet’s holistic products and solutions cater to diverse B2C, B2B markets, covering the entire sanitation spectrum from products (onsite solid waste management solutions) and services (corrective and maintenance products for wastewater and effluent treatment).



The Vetiver System is a soft engineering approach to a wide range of soil and water related challenges in tropical climates. The deep, strong, and fibrous root system of vetiver plants can, if implemented correctly, serve as a valuable bioengineering tool for slope stabilization, erosion control, soil and water conservation, and also for cleaning of contaminated lands and water through phytoremediation.

Vie et Agriculture (EVA) is a social enterprise set-up by Laila Sagnane and other women engineers that operates in the water supply and agriculture sector. They rehabilitate faulty water infrastructure and install new systems for water distribution in rural communities.



Viva con Agua Nepal is an association that aims at raising awareness on clean water and sanitation among urban youths. The association organizes the first Festival “Art Creates Water” in Kathmandu bringing together local & international artists to sensitize urban young people on sanitation, water, and hygiene.



WANAG is an application that allows users to locate and make use of pre-approved public toilets and toilets in participating private businesses, such as restaurants. The YWF pilot will enable Hamat to evaluate the market demand, partner with businesses and develop the app itself.

WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) is a young non-profit organization with the aim of raising awareness of the privileged water situation in Switzerland while simultaneously integrating donation for water projects into everyday life. Thanks to partnerships with restaurants and companies aswell as other campaigns, WfW promotes innovative solutions drinking tap water. While all donations generated in restaurants go 100% to the projects in Zambia and Moçambique, „WfW in the office“-companies decide whether their engagement should focus on projects in Switzerland or sub-Saharan Africa.



Henry Ouma from Water School Uganda developed GDM Water Kiosks to treat up to 6000 liter of water from Lake Victoria per day in order to provide access to clean water for rural communities in Uganda.



Water-CHANGE-NA is a start-up that aims to improve water efficiency in Senegal. One of their projects aimed at developing and testing a prototype of a filtration device that will allow households to recycle greywater.



After building a rural primary school for over 400 children, Innocent from Rewarding Africa Water Kiosk is now launching Rewarding Africa Water Kiosks. His pilot aims to set up water kiosks using rainwater harvested from the school roof and supply water to the entire community.

Yate Tech designs and builds automated technologies to improve access to water, sanitation, hygiene and provide agricultural solutions. For the YWF pilot, Bassirou is formalising his business and developing and commercialising one of his innovations: Arrosel, an automated irrigation system.



foodwaste.ch aims at reducing the amount of food waste generated in the food chain. The organisation works towards engaging public bodies, industries and households to reduce their share of food waste in order to contribute to a more sustainable food system.



iFarmkonnect is an AgriTechplatform which connects local farmers with smart water harvesting and saving technologies and investors in Kenya. Through a web platform water technology providers and investors are connected with local farmers. Local farmers can make inquiries and get information on smart water management technologies through mobile messages or an app in their local language. iFarmkonnect was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship 2019.



iWASH Africa is a young Ghanaian social enterprise that is solving lack of clean water and sanitation challenges in rural communities by building an integrated self-sustaining water and sanitation solution through the construction of low-cost, environmentally-friendly micro-flush toilets and solar powered water provision systems, using an entrepreneurial approach. iWASH Africa was part of the Young Water Solutions Fellowship in 2018.

Al-Amal Farm sells environmentally-grown fruits and vegetables to the local community as well as the local/regional market. The groceries the farm offers is unique, as it is grown in healthy environments, which is free from toxins and chemicals while preserving fertile soil rich in living organisms.



Benaa is a not-for-profit organization that aims at building up the youth capacities, in order to build up sustainable development projects, and create an interactive enabling environment in the MENA region.



Blue Filter is a company specialized in producing natural filters for water purification from nitrates and other harmful substances without the use of chemical additives or the need for energy. KomLori delivers raw water to community water treatment points using a cargo tricycle (commonly referred to as a Motorking). KomLori rents out Motorkings at a low weekly rate (below market rate) to drivers in exchange for 2 daily water deliveries. The raw water is then sold at the water points at a low fee, enabling community water treatment points to re-sell the treated water with a small margin. KomLori is also piloting a rent-to-own model where drivers can own the Motorking after a year of weekly rental of the vehicle.
