The Water Action in Enterprises (WAIN) project supported Jordan's industrial sector in its transition toward environmentally friendly and resource efficient production. Implemented under GAIN project by GIZ Jordan, Cewas helped industrial establishments from five industrial sub-sectors including food , chemicals, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and packaging through providing technical and financial feasibility assessments to address water efficiency and responsible management to strengthen the sector's resilience and reduce its environmental footprint.
Cewas’s primary role was to develop, improve, and deliver the technical and financial feasibility assessment to enable companies implement water conservation measures in their production processes. This was done through a structured, practical methodology that coprised: screening companies to identify those most in need of water efficiency interventions, conducting rapid assessments to validate data and measurement readiness, carrying out technical feasibility assessments to identify innovative solutions, evaluating financial feasibility to confirm investments were worthwhile, and facilitating finance by matching companies with instruments that offered green finance products.
To find the right company matches for this support catalogue, Cewas screened more than 250 company profiles, advanced over 20 through pre-feasibility, and developed full feasibility business cases for 6 large enterprises in the chemical, food processing, and packaging sectors. The feasibility studies revealed that Payback period for implementing water saving measures ranged between 1-3 years for investments ranging from 116,500 JOD to 290,000 JOD.
To make these lessons available to others, Cewas developed the WAIN Replication Manual, a practical tool that guides the planning and implementation of water efficiency business cases in similar industrial contexts in Jordan and beyond. The manual is available online (click here).
A Partnership for Green Industry in Jordan
GAIN was implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and under the auspices of the Jordanian Ministry of Environment. The project brought together public institutions, service providers, and businesses around a shared goal of accelerating the shift to sustainable production.
